COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is an Intermediate/Advanced course designed to explore and develop fundamental tango-technique concepts. Each workshop will have a movement-based theme and students will be encouraged to apply the core elements into their movement work.

The workshops are structured in three parts including individual and couples exercises, movement work (including embellishments) and phrased combinations (how to organize movement to music).

AIM

The goal of the course is to help students develop a natural embrace, strong, fluid, and musical connection between leaders and followers, and a wide variety of movement.

 

COURSE PROGRAMME

 

WEEK ONE

Thursday 18 February

Theme: ESSENTIAL TOOLS FOR IMPROVISATION IN TANGO

Contents: Posture, axis, alighment, suspension (groundedness), intention of movement, projection of movement, disassociation. Simple phrased combinations.

 

WEEK TWO

Thursday 25 February

Theme: EL ABRAZO (The embrace)

Contents: From closed to open embrace and back. Shapes, tones, expansions and contractions. Phrased combinations in closed to open embrace.

WEEK THREE

Theme: GIROS EN ABRAZO CERRADO (Turns in closed embrace)

REQUIREMENTS

No need to book in advance. All workshops run as drop-in sessions. No need to bring a partner. However we do recommend coming in couples to take full advantage of workshops.

ABOUT Maria SOLERO

María discovered her passion for Tango more than 10 years ago in Rosario (Argentina). She started her professional activity in Rosario and Buenos Aires.  Took part in many shows and danced with the most famous Tango orchestras  (“El Arranque”, Esteban Morgado with “Patio de tango”, Juanjo Dominguez , RositangoTrío, Los Tauras, Hermanos Amadeo, etc). She was part of some Dance-Theater Companies too : “Lo que vendrá”, “Intertango” and “Poca Cosa”.

In 2001 she was called to teach and perform in San Francisco and Mineápolis. The same year, she did a tour across several european cities (London, Berlín, Leipzig, Nimes) and took part of the internacional tango Festival of Toulouse “Rencontres du Sud” . At the end of  2001, María was asked to teach and perform for two well-known Argentine Tango Associations in Portugal. The “Escuela Argentina de Tango” from Lisboa and the “Clube de Tango do Porto”. She also participated in TV programs, shows and  art exhibitions in traditional and famous places of the country (Teatro San Luís,Lisboa, Teatro Sá da Bandera, Porto, Museum “Fundação de Serralves” Porto, Universidade de Coimbra, Universidade de Aveiro, etc.). In 2002 María was invited as Artístic Consultant by the “Primeiro Festival Internacional de Tango do Porto”. During 2003 and 2004 she taught in the Instituto Politécnico “E.S.M.A.E” do Porto (scola de teatro e musica) and at Aveiro University, leading several workshops across the contry as well. She regulary organised her own Practicas and Milongas : “Rita, La Salvaje” attended by many of the young movement of dancers of today. 

In 2005 she moved to Buenos Aires and worked in the most popular places of tango “Escuela Argentina de Tango”, “Tango Brujo”, Made in Tango, etc. She also travelled giving workshops and performances in others argentine cities  and Europe (Portugal, Italy, Spain) as well. 

At the beginning of 2008, she taught as a regular teacher for  “Tango de La Rosa” and gave workshops Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff and Bylaugh).

Maria now lives in London working in prominent tango shows, giving performances and teaching.

Most of you will remember her TV appearance in the Strictly Come Dancing tango show last year and of course her performance with Richard Manuel in the award-winning show “Tango! Tango!”, currently on tour in the UK.

ABOUT Ivan ARANDIA

Ivan Arandia is an Argentinean tango dancer, choreographer and teacher with 15 years of experience. Ivan trained with Argentinean tango masters such as Gustavo Naveira and Giselle Anne, Sebastian Arce and Mariana Montes, Osvaldo Zotto,  Gabriel Angio and Natalia Games, amongst other important figures of the tango world. He danced in the movie "Evita", and participated in "Strictly Dancing", a Channel 4 documentary on Tango. Ivan choreographed the dance scenes in the Alek Keshishian’s film "Love and Others Disasters" starring Brittany Murphy.

Siempre", teaching and performing in the Royal Academy of Arts and various arts centers in the regions. In Australia, Ivan performed for the show "Tango Takes 2" in Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne. He also ran various tango workshops in Melbourne and Perth. He performed in the show “La Milonga Interna” at the 2004 Festival do Atlantico in Madeira, Portugal.

As a member of the company Tiempo de Tango (2004 - 2009), Ivan danced at the 58 LLangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales and at the Edinburgh Festival.

He also toured the UK with Aerial Dance Theatre Company WIRED (2008).

Ivan is the director of NEGRACHA Tango School in Holborn, central London. He also runs NEGRACHA Tango Club, London's leading and most popular tango club attracting over 250 people every Friday night. Currently, Ivan teaches and performs tango regularly in various scenes in the UK and abroad and he is also part of the team organizing RIVER TANGO - London International Tango Festival 2009
